John D. Rockefeller was an American industrialist, entrepreneur, CEO and one of, if not the richest man in history.

At the age of 14 years old Rockefella started several small businesses before landing his first real job at 16, where he was an assistant bookkeeper at Hewitt & Tuttle.

At the age of 20 he decided to start his own venture with a business partner. He worked as a commission merchant in hay, grains, meat, and other goods. By the end of his first year in business, Rockefeller’s company had grossed $450,000.

It was in the early 1860s that Rockefeller spotted an opportunity in the oil business and decided to establish an oil refinery in Cleveland in 1863. After only 2 years it was the biggest refinery in the area and that’s when he decided to make it his full focus.
