Unlike a lot of tips and strategies to boost your self-esteem, the self-esteem boosters you’ll find here are specific actions you can add to your day that will make a real difference to your self-image and your levels of self-esteem.
Without going into my story too much I had a large period of my life where I just destroyed my self-esteem and confidence because I was too hard on myself for not having a Ferrari or being a millionaire at 25 years old and all that kinda stuff, and instead having my first failed business leaving me $70,000 in debt at 26.
I was my own biggest critic and I’ve had to learn the hard way that, as counter intuitive as it may seem, being kind to yourself is actually the better way to create success in your life.
I think Bruce Lee says it best when he said “Be happy, but never satisfied.”
With all that being said the self-esteem boosters below are proven strategies and practical actions you can take on a daily basis to boost your self-esteem.
Whilst it would be easy for me to say “stop being negative”…how do you actually to that? How do you actually implement that if its become a habitual way of thinking?
So while that maybe good advice, the purpose of this post is to give you real strategies that are easy to implement and gain the benefits from.
Simply put, questions control your focus and you get what you focus on. If you focus on the good about yourself and your life you will experience more of it and in turn it will boost your self-esteem.
Make it a habit to ask yourself these questions every morning.
2. Positive Focus
Positive Focus is a technique I came to know about from the strategic coach, Dan Sullivan.
Most of us seem to focus on what we didn’t get done or what went wrong at the end of the day.
Just like asking yourself the right questions, if at the end of the day you focus on what actually went right and what you did well it will increase your self-esteem and confidence.
When you feel good about yourself you’ll find you experience more success the following day, and the next, and the next and so on.
To do the Positive Focus, at the end of the day simply ask yourself what are 5 things that were good about your day and write them down.
3. I Am Enough Mirror Affirmations
Sounds weird to say this but this is one of my favourite self-esteem boosters and is extremely simple to do.
Stand in front of a mirror, look into your eyes and repeat the following:
“I am enough. I am enough. I have always been enough. And now that I know I’m enough everyone else knows it too. And I will always be enough.”
I recommend doing this for 10 minutes twice a day for the first 30-60 days. After that you can reduce the time if you want.
Once you believe you are enough you’ll see a dramatic increase in your self-esteem. Mirror affirmations are a simple way to develop that belief.
Decide what you want and come up with some simple affirmations based on that which you can repeat to yourself for a few minutes every day.
You can even use affirmations apps and use their preset affirmations to help build your confidence and self-esteem.
5. Visualise
There are 2 ways you can do this.
Number one is to visualise your ideal self. So see yourself how you would like to be. See yourself doing the things you want to do. See yourself successful. See yourself healthy and vibrant…whatever makes you feel good.
The second way is to visualise yourself achieving your goals.
Ideally you want to spend at least 5 minutes twice a day, morning and evening doing this.
If you have low self-esteem you probably don’t see yourself in the best light. Adding this habit to your daily route will not only improve your self-image but also boost your confidence.
6. Write Out Your Goals
Again of all the self-esteem boosters this is a very easy one to do!
First of all you must have goals. You must be working toward something. Simply doing so will boost your self-esteem.
By writing them out everyday you will be reminded of that. You’re basically sending yourself the message that you are doing something important and so you’ll experience a boost in self-esteem.
7. Read For 30 Minutes A Day
Brian Tracy says “If you can get yourself to read 30 minutes a day, you’re going to double your income every year.”
And that alone should boost your self-esteem!
But I recommend reading 30 minutes of non-fiction every day to help you learn and grow. As you find yourself growing as a person and increasing your knowledge you’ll also be improving your self-esteem.
8. Learn A New Skill
As mentioned above with the point about growing I would recommend trying to spend a small portion of you day trying to learn a new skill.
Challenge yourself and push yourself outside of your comfort zone.
It can be any skill. Physical or mental and just spending as little as 15 minutes a day can make a big difference.
9. List Out 10 Things You Admire About Yourself
Check out this quick Tedx Talk by Niko Everett on building your self-esteem.
This is a quick strategy we can all start doing on a daily basis. Simply list out 10 things you admire about yourself.
Do this every day and mix it up. Try to think of new things your admire about yourself every day.
10. Create A To Do List The Night Before
The point of this self-esteem booster is to make sure you start your day with a purpose.
When you know your day has a purpose and you’re working on something important it will impact your self-esteem positively as opposed to waking up and not really having a plan for the day.
11. Exercise
Exercise is a scientifically proven method of boosting your self-esteem.
Whilst I would recommend the type of exercise that gets your heart rate up and works up a sweat, any type of exercise will make a difference, the point it that you do it.
Nobody else can do the exercise for you and getting into shape will do wonders for your self-image and confidence.
